Having Freelanced for a number of years in my career, I have put together some thoughts and pointers for folks who happen to be doing or done the same. It can be a tough path but rewarding too. I have never necessarily chosen the freelance life and it’s all contingent on the right opportunity. I feel privileged to have experienced working with so many different talented people from New York City to Dublin, London, Washington D.C., Austin (TX), Madrid, and Amsterdam. Enough rambling, I hope these thoughts are useful to some peeps 😎
I started another project testing and trying out GenAI combining ChatGPT to generate a story and then using Firefly in Photoshop to bring it to life. I started with this prompt in ChatGPT "Make up a short story about a gritty futuristic cowboy on Mars." I mean, what a start! ChatGPT spat a story out, which I decided not to edit. I used this story as inspiration for GenAI prompts in Photoshop. I had to toggle a few of the image options and switch up my prompts to generate something I felt was matching the story and was stylistically consistent. Ultimately, I used just 3 generated images and then composed them into something visually engaging. I then added typography.
For this poster, I started by asking ChatGPT to “Write a short love story in Tokyo”. I then took the title and decided it was a great band name (of course). I took 2 images from Unsplash and started entering prompts in Firefly to mash the images up with a garden and cityscape, it created a weird and interesting contrast of eerieness and zen, the perfect “Tokyo Love Symphony” vibe. I added typography, glyphs, and patterns. It ended up as a fictional promo poster with a theatre name and logo I created. This was a purestream of consciousness design and concept. I think GenAI is going to be a great tool to facilitate creative thinking going forward. Facilitate not overtake, it took my human touch to bring it to life coherently.
